‘The thing came abruptly and unannounced; a demon, rat-like, scurrying from pits remote and unimaginable, a hellish panting and stifled grunting, and then from that opening beneath the chimney a burst of multitudinous and leprous life - a loathsome night-spawned flood of organic corruption more devastatingly hideous than the blackest conjurations of mortal madness and morbidity.’

Only the expansive imagination of H.P. Lovecraft could conceive the delicious and spine-tingling horrors you will find within the pages of this unique collection. In addition to such classics as The Picture in the House, The Music of Erich Zann and The Rats in the Walls, this volume contains some fascinating rarities examples of Lovecraft's earliest weird fiction and material unpublished during his lifetime.

H.P. Lovecraft's creation of the Cthulhu Mythos has influenced many modern authors, and still remains at the forefront of supernatural literature.

The Lurking Fear Collected Short Stories Volume Four Tales of Mystery The Supernatural edition by Howard Phillips Lovecraft David Stuart Davies MJ Elliot Literature Fiction eBooks

These Wordsworth editions are actually quite handsome, and they are convenient when one wants an edition of H. P. Lovecraft's fiction to take on bus or rail. The Contents:
The Lurking Fear
The Beast in the Cave
The Alchemist
The Tomb
Beyond the Wall of Sleep
Memory
The Transition of Juan Romero
The White Ship
The Terrible Old Man
Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family
The Street
The Temple
The Tree
From Beyond
Nyarlathotep
The Picture in the House
Ex Oblivione
The Quest of Ironon
The Moon-Bog
The Outsider
The Music of Erich Zann
Hypnos
Azathoth

Thus we can see that, for the most part, this collection is made up of early, in some cases very early, writings. It showcases Lovecraft's poorest efforts, and some few of his finest and most fascinating. It serves as an excellent example of how Lovecraft's grotesque racism seeped into his fiction, and yet it also shews Lovecraft to possess a gift for poetic prose and an original imagination. "The Lurking Fear" was written to order, for a semi-professional journal, and Lovecraft thought little of it; yet it is an excellent feast of Gothic horror, containing some of the author's ghastliest scenes. Some of the writing seems overdone, yet surely this catches the emotional turmoil suffered by the tale's narrator. "The White Ship" is an early example of sheer fantasy, beautifully expressed. "The Picture in the House" is a classic example of Lovecraft's approach to non-supernatural horror, subtly expressed. "The Outsider" and "The Music of Erich Zann" are of keen interest for a number of reasons, but I am intrigued by an idea that they exist somewhere between reality and dream, in a region of dark phantasy that is uniquely Lovecraftian. All in all, this slim volume contains some of the finest, some of the poorest, of H. P. Lovecraft's fiction, all of which is of interest, all of which rewards careful reading.

Not the same cover as pictured. I got these to complete the set, but now everything is mismatched.
